First Sunday of Advent/Sunday of Hope
PRÉLUDE / ORGAN VOLUNTARY
NOTRE APPORCHE VERS DIEU / OUR APPROACH TO GOD
BIENVENUE, PRIÈRE ET APPEL À LA CÉLÉBRATION / GREETING, PRAYER AND CALL TO WORSHIP
(Se lever / Congregation rises as the Minister enters)
As I live every day, I want to be a channel for peace. May I bring love where there is hatred and healing where there is hurt; joy where there is sadness, and hope where there is fear. I pray that I may always try to understand and comfort other people, as well as seeking comfort and understanding from them. May I choose always to be a light in the darkness, a help in times of need, and a caring honest friend. And may justice, kindness, and peace flow from my heart forever. Amen.
The Light shines in the darkness.
We come to worship, seeking the light of Christ once again.
Shine into our lives, and into our world this Advent.
Renew us with fresh hope.
The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all.
And also with you.
Holy, holy, holy, Lord God almighty!
Early in the morning our song shall rise to Thee;
Holy, holy, holy, merciful and mighty,
God in Three Persons, blessed Trinity! (Sung)
ADVENT CANDLE LIGHTING LITURGY
The prophet Isaiah announced that people of all nations will come to the mountain of the Lord and learn God’s ways.
When we look at this suffering world, we know we need to follow God’s ways.
God will settle disputes among the nations. Weapons will be transformed into tools for planting and growth. Nations will live in peace – no more will they prepare for war.
We cling to that promise and light this candle of hope, inspired by a vision of a world where children grow into adulthood, and parents live to old age.
(The candle is lit.)
All: Living God, make us more aware of your presence. We trust your promises and wait with hopeful hearts. Come, Lord Jesus.
HYMN: 119 HOPE IS A STAR (v 1)
Hope is a star that shines in the night
leading us on till the morning is bright.
When God is a child, there’s joy in our song.
The last shall be first, and the weak shall be strong.
And none shall be afraid.
PRIÈRE D’INVOCATION / PRAYER OF INVOCATION
CANTIQUE / HYMN: 122 O COME, O COME EMMANUEL (1 – 4)
PRIÈRE DE CONFESSION / PRAYER OF CONFESSION
God of hope, we confess that we often prefer to accept half-truths and pleasing ideas, rather than your challenging word. We praise our own cleverness rather than your wisdom. We have exploited others for our benefit and used the earth without a thought for its wellbeing. In your mercy, forgive what we have been, help us amend what we are, and direct who we shall be through the mercy of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
LE NOTRE PÈRE / THE LORD’S PRAYER
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors. Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil, for thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory. Forever and ever, Amen.

PSAUME / RESPONSIVE READING: Psalm 122
I was glad when they said to me, “Let us go to the house of the Lord!”
Our feet are standing within your gates, O Jerusalem.
Jerusalem – built as a city that is bound firmly together.
To it the tribes go up, the tribes of the Lord, as was decreed for Israel, to give thanks to the name of the Lord.
For there, the thrones for judgement were set up, the thrones of the house of David.
Pray for the peace of Jerusalem: “May they prosper who love you. Peace be within your walls and security within your towers.”
For the sake of my relatives and friends I will say, “Peace be within you.”
For the sake of the house of the Lord our God, I will seek your good.
GLORIA PATRI (594) (Gloire au Père)
Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

Rev. Dr. Katherine Burgess
During Advent, we sing Hope is a Star, Advent hymns and familiar Christmas hymns.
For those who have expressed interest in singing as a choir, we are including a list of upcoming hymns to give people the opportunity to learn their parts on their own ahead of time. Please see France at the beginning of the service for sitting assignment. It is important to note that people should not wear perfume while singing close to others.
How to proceed to study the music on your own:
For those who read music, you may take pictures of the hymns in the hymn book for you to practice at home for the next service. For those learning by ear, many common hymns are available on you tube where you can listen to them ahead of time. During services, the organist always plays the entire hymn once as an introduction, giving you a head start on how it goes.
We are currently taking the necessary steps to upgrade to Tithe.ly's new platform.
Meanwhile, you can donate via Interac (bank transfer) to Rev. Burgess at: katherine.burgess.pcc@gmail.com
